Synopsis

The film starts with Karan [Fardeen Khan] and Bhavesh [Tusshar Kapoor] arriving at the court, they sit out remembering how their lives were six months ago. Karan [Fardeen Khan], Bhavesh [Tusshar Kapoor] and Jeet [Govinda] are close friends living in Cape Town, South Africa. Karan is in a comfortable relationship with his attractive yet childish and pampered girlfriend Sanjana [Genelia DSouza] who changes her profession every six months, e.g. singing to painting, and her dad [Anupam Kher] always tries to keep her happy by either sponsoring her music album or buying all her paintings. Bhavesh wishes for an arranged marriage and keeps a diary of all the beautiful things he will do to his wife after marriage. His father [Darshan Jariwala] is a strict autocrat, patriarch and a tough follower of the Hindustani, especially Gujarati, principles in a foreign land. Jeet does not believe in marriage or in the institution of love. He flirts around with every woman he can find and keeps encouraging married women into divorcing their spouses so that his living as a divorce lawyer is uncompromised. Bhaveshs father treats Bhavesh as young, incapable of marriage, but on his wifes [Shoma Anand] wish, he travels with family and Karan and Sanjana to Gujarat to find Bhavesh a bride. In Gujarat, they stay at the palatial home of a friend of Bhaveshs father [Vikram Gokhale]. Bhavesh meets some girls but set falls for Prachi [Prachi Desai] when she comments Bhaveshs ideals - not drinking, virginity - as good. He confesses his love for her and they get married. During rituals, Sanjana says "yes" to Karans long asked question and they get married the same night. The movie then turns to the actual time, where the judge declares the divorce between Karan and Sanjana and between Bhavesh and Prachi. Then outside the court, where they wait for the final papers to arrive, the story again returns to after the weddings, when they come back to Cape Town. After marriage, Karan and Sanjanas family life deteriorates badly, with Karan wanting domestic stability and Sanjana being a horrible home maker. Bhavesh is happy with Prachi but Prachi is stifled at the old fashioned ideals of Bhaveshs father. Sanjana, having no experience in housework, messes up while turning off a washing machine, which results in the house catching fire. Prachi, without her father-in-laws knowledge, applies for a job - the very idea of which angers him. Bhavesh, taking sides with his father, slaps her at the same time her father arrives. These situations conclude in divorce. Jeet changes his lifestyle and decides to get married to a girl he flirted with Anjali [Amrita Rao]. At their wedding ceremony, Jeet and Sanjana plots a plan that reunites everyone. Bhaveshs father changes parts of his ideals and Jeet changes from a divorce lawyer to a marriage counsellor, now reuniting his former clients, while Karan is shown to be teaching Sanjana to cook.

Whilst here are many that support the exniitg framework of disaster response (existing indigenous power structures, the power of corporations seeking to profit, the entrenched practices of donor governments, agencies and NGOs, the media, etc), the ultimate responsibility is ours, that is the citizens of the global north. It is our individual donations, our contributions through taxation and, above all, our complicity that permits this to happen. We are content to let those who run the organisations to which we donate to carry on as they want, we do not hold our representatives to account for our governments' response and we quietly absorb the messages that we are given. We accept that those best placed to understand the needs of the affected country and its citizens and to lead the relief and recovery efforts are from our own countries and that they are obviously better than indigenous leaders and governments. Here is the crux of the issue. It is covert racism that enables us to tolerate this state of affairs, we intrinsically believe that our way is best, that they' are unable to govern themselves, to choose their own representatives, to run their own businesses, to know what is good for them. Until we recognise this and deal with it we will continue to be complicit in the failure to respond appropriately to disasters.
